1997 1 Kilo Gold Panda Commemorative  Coins

China is one of the largest contributors of mined gold through out the world.  In 2021, they produced almost 370 metric tons of gold, and added it to the gold market in multiple ways.  This production, their numerous minting facilities across China, and their collaborated efforts to consistently reimagine the artwork in a flawless manner is second to none.  As a result, they even release proofed gold coins that weigh up to 1 kilo every few years.   This 1997 1 Kilo Gold Panda Commemorative Coin is a limited edition and a proof bullion coin.

Historical Significance:

In 1982, The People’s Republic of China released the first issue of the Chinese Gold Panda bullion coin.  This started to honor their beloved Panda, whose population decreased significantly due to mass poaching in the 1980s.  Even though the poaching was halted, their population continued to decline, placing them on the endangered species list in the 1990s.   Although their habitat is protected, and has expanded immensely, they continue to remain listed as an endangered species to this day.

Features of the Coin:

1. Its Design:  The reverse/rear of the bullion coin features The Temple of Heaven.  The obverse/front of the coin features a young panda perched on a tree limb.
2. Fineness and Purity:  This 1997 1 kilo gold bullion coin, is made of 99.99% pure gold (24 karat gold).
3. Legal Tender Status:  This can be used and circulated, but its face value is only 2000 yuan, and can only be used as legal tender in China.
4. Limited Edition Proof Coins:  This 1997 1 Kilo Gold Panda Commemorative Coin is part of the limited edition of proof coins.
