2019 Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Restrike – 1oz Gold Coin

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, this coin celebrates the historical landing of Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins in 1969.  This coin is a tribute to the United States astronauts being the first manned landing and walking on the surface of the moon.  The 2019 Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative one ounce coin, made of 24 karat gold, captures the essence of America’s legacy with the crew’s names, launched, landing and return dates on the reverse side of the coin. On the obverse, the American Bald Eagle is featured, about to land on the moon’s surface, with the Earth in the background.

Historical Significance:

Beginning with the Apollo 7 flight into space, many US astronauts would create a design for the medallions that accompanied them in their flight to outer space.  And on the Apollo 11 mission, their medallions were carried with them on the lunar surface from the lunar module.  These medallions would include the surnames of the flight crew, as well as the dates of when their mission was launched, the landing on the moon, and the date of their return.

Features of the Coin:

Its Design:  On the obverse side, an American Bald Eagle is readying to land on the surface of the moon, to symbolize the United States of America.  The Earth is seen in the background, with Apollo 11 struck on the top of the coin.  The reverse has the surnames of the crew, along with the date of the launch, the date of the landing on the moon, and their return to Earth.
